William Steig, (1907-2003) contributing two pieces to the Gallery has worked with the New Yorker since 1932 and until his death in 2003. He produced over 100 New Yorker covers. His artwork is considered a hallmark of New Yorker work, and his is widely considered a defining contributor to the publication. In his work ‘Population Study’ and “Red Ball’ we can admire his raw sense of form and function.
Another defining contributor is George Booth, who amassed several era-defining cartoons to the publication. He is well known for his comic work depicting older individuals in hilarious situations. Here in his work, ‘Antiques’, we see that witty sense of humor at play.
Ellen Lanyon (1926-2013) is known for her organic forms mixed with surrealist visuals. In her lithograph piece, Lilies, it is no different. Her work had been independently exhibited over seventy-five times during her lifetime.
