Viviane de Kosinsky

A master etcher, Viviane de Kosinsky trained with Swiss, Italian and American professors in etching and lithography. After studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, Florence, and Venice, she specializes in the medium of line etching in the manner of Rembrandt, a procedure which has not changed in 400 years. There are usually 23 steps involved in working layers of freehand drawing in a mirror image onto metal plates, using wax resists and nitric acid baths. Her hand-tinted etchings, painting layers of watercolor with very small brushes, hark back to the early days of 19th and 20th century book illustration, depicting scenes from travels often witnessed by animal life or sometimes chefs. Now settled in Virginia with a second home in Sperryville, her works are in numerous private and public collections including purchase awards in miniature art societies worldwide. She has had four exhibitions at the R.H. Ballard Gallery. In 2016 she received her second Award for Excellence from the World Federation of Miniaturists. She is a signature member of the Miniature Artists of America.
